Overview

Lemonade does pet insurance a little differently. Its big selling point is speed. It claims you can get your pet insured in seconds and your claims reviewed and paid in minutes. In fact, it says its AI software approves 30% of all claims within three minutes. It offers accident and illness cover with add-ons, including a ‘preventative and wellness’ plan. Lemonade is also a public benefit corporation, which means that some of its profits go to meaningful causes, including animal welfare organizations.

How good is Lemonade’s customer service?

Lemonade’s customer service seems to have a good reputation among our reviewers, many of whom mention quick and friendly response times from the chat function on the app.

How do I contact Lemonade?

Lemonade’s general email is help@lemonade.com. You can also message them through the app, by clicking on the Help button on its website, or via social media. Its Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts can all be messaged directly.

What is Lemonade’s claims process?

Claims are made via the Lemonade app. We’ve found the process to be pretty simple and intuitive. You enter your bank details and they pay for the treatment, minus your deductible and co-insurance.

How much will Lemonade pay for my claim?

Lemonade pays the vet bill for your pet’s treatment minus the deductible and co-insurance on your policy. Here are some examples.
Average Vet Bill Cash back w/ 70% Cash back w/ 90% Difference w/ 70%
Cancer $8,280 $5,796 $7,452 $1,656
Leg Fracture $5,752 $4,026 $5,177 $1,151
Swallowed Object $3,458 $2,421 $3,112 $691
Gum Disease $1,942 $1,359 $1,748 $389

Are there any exclusions?

It’s rare for any insurance to have no exclusions and Lemonade’s list is pretty standard: pre-existing conditions, bilateral conditions, things that aren’t accidents or illnesses, experimental treatments, and anything that occurs before the waiting period is up. Vet exam fees aren’t covered by the standard plan but can be included with add-ons.

What are the waiting periods for conditions?

Two days for accidents – that’s very fast – 14 days for illnesses, and six months for cruciate ligament events. The benefits of the preventative package kick in the day after you buy your policy, which is something our reviewers like a lot.

How quickly does Lemonade pay claims?

If the AI approves your claim, Lemonade says it will pay out within three minutes, which is market-leading. It says that this accounts for around 30% of claims. However, it makes no promises when it comes to the other 70%. According to reviews, it takes a lot longer than three minutes but we’ve seen very few unhappy customers when it comes to getting paid.

Can I customize my Lemonade plan?

Yes, Lemonade has a couple of add-ons. You can opt for the Extended Accident and Illness package which covers vet visit fees and treatments for things such as physical therapy, hydrotherapy and acupuncture. The Preventative and Wellness package covers costs like annual wellness exams, vaccines, routine dental cleaning, blood tests, parasite and heartworm testing, flea, tick and heartworm medications. You can also chat with Lemonade’s pet health experts.

State availability for Lemonade

Lemonade currently covers pets in 36 states, but you can take your pet to any vet in the US, as long as they’re licensed in the state where they operate.

Verdict: Is Lemonade pet insurance good?

No pet insurance is perfect and different plans suit different people. Lemonade certainly wins points for its ease of use – the app is rated highly by users – and cost. The choice of coverage is limited, but this is seen as both a pro and a con depending on your point of view. In short, while Lemonade is very good and premiums are comparatively low, it’s less comprehensive than some others.
