Fetch was called Petplan for years until it was acquired by The Dodo – a very entertaining and life-affirming animal-focussed content hub. This happened in March 2022, so you’ll be forgiven for not knowing about the change.

This means that a plan with Fetch is backed by a huge amount of experience in the pet insurance industry. That plan will be one of two: dog or cat. What its plans cover isn’t customizable and there are no wellness add-ons, but there are plenty of variables when it comes to annual limits, deductibles and reimbursement levels.

Less common benefits include a lost pet advertisement scheme, boarding fees and vacation cancellation payments, plus there’s no upper age limit for your pet.

Waiting times for cover to kick in are on the long side and the lack of a wellness option will put some people off. But it seems to pay claims quickly and it provides it offers a 10% discount if you adopt a rescue pet from a shelter, if you’re an AARP member, if you’re a veteran or in active military service, are a vet or veterinary staff, or your pet is a licensed medical services pet (e.g. a therapy animal).

FACT! Of the 210 people who work at Fetch by The Dodo, 172 are pet parents

Petted Review

The pet insurance company formerly known as Petplan has a comprehensive offering and some excellent discounts, but the waiting times and a lack of wellness cover weighs against it.

Fetch makes monthly payments affordable and easy to make. I give them 5 stars for using the insurance. They pay quickly and it deposits right to your account. Just maintain yearly vet visits so if you ever need to use your pet insurance you are covered. I would not be without this protection.

Great coverage, complicated claims

Great coverage, but the claims process leaves a little bit to be desired. I took my dog to the vet, he was treated, and I filed my claim the same day. Two days later, he had a follow up, so I again, filed my claim the same day, scanning and sending all my detailed invoices and receipts, and submitted each claim. After five days had passed, I went on the app to check out the status, and it was telling me I still needed documentation. I rescanned off everything I had received from the vet, and waited another five days. After the tenth day, I checked the app again, and it was still saying I was missing documentation. All this without so much as an email telling me I needed more documentation. I called Fetch Customer service, and the customer service rep told me they need all the office notes from the visits, which is something they don’t release to me. I called my vet, and the girl in my Vet’s office took all my information, and sent Fetch what they needed. What a hassle! Thank God I have a great vet who stepped up, and took care of everything that was needed. Bottom line, I got reimbursed, but well past the stated 10-14 days that the policy promised. The whole thing should not have been this complicated. It’s easier to file a claim on my car insurance. My credit card statement for the two visits, which was in excess of $1400, arrived before I got reimbursed.
