MetLife has been selling life insurance since 1868, but moved into the pet insurance market in 2004 – and those 150+ years of experience really show. Its plans tick a lot of positive boxes, not least their flexibility and reliability, with plenty of adjustable financial options – including 50% to 100% reimbursement – and around eight out of 10 claims paid within 10 days.
It’s also an industry leader when it comes to waiting periods. Illnesses are a competitive 14 days, but accidents start at midnight on the day you take out your plan, which is as short a waiting period as you can hope to get.
MetLife has a heart, too, donating $500,000 to animal shelters in 2021. Other nice touches include discounts for members of the armed forces, first responders, and the staff and owners of animal care facilities.

We like the financial options with MetLife and the super short accident waiting period. The reward scheme and Family Plan are unique benefits, too, but note the lack of a telehealth service.

Really great service
My dog was attacked by another dog at the dog park and she needed emergency surgery. Met life were really great – so sympathetic and helpful on the phone. My claim was reimbursed in just a few days and Coco recovered a few weeks later. I would definitely recommend met life to anyone with a pet.
My review on Met Life pet insurance
Very competitive prices if you ask me, and very good coverage. I chose high benefit with a low deductible and added preventative care on for an extra $30. It pays for itself if I counted up what I’d have spent in veterinary fees over the years.
Metlife look after my Bob!
I can’t tell you the peace of mind it gives me to know that Bob is insured. He’s getting on a bit and I do worry about him.
Happy enough
Been with Metlife for years and never had a problem with them. Haven’t had to make any claims thank the lord but the cover is good for what I pay. Happy staying with them for the forseeable.
Could be better….
We have MetLife Pet insurance, which was offered through my boyfriends job, for our pets-2 cats, 2 dogs. The dogs have full coverage, the cats accidental. The site/app is a bit confusing and they take forever to process a claim but they make payment back to you pretty simple. Overall I’m glad we have it but I do wish the routine preventative care limit was higher (it’s $100). I also wish they had sent a packet in the mail explaining the plan we had so that it was easier to make sense of..
