Founded in 1884, the American Kennel Club has plenty of history with dogs, but its pet insurance is a comparative newcomer, having been around for just over 20 years.
Known for being competitively priced, AKC has five different levels of its CompanionCare plan, which differ only in their coverage limits and deductible options. There is a free 30-day trial.
However, exams, preventative care and dental care are not covered, and while pets over nine years old may be enrolled, illness coverage is not offered for dogs and cats over this age.

Expensive surgery
My dog needed surgery after breaking his leg. I was so glad I had taken out his insurance last year because there’s just no way I could of paid for the surgery, it was a fortune. Luckily AKC reimbursed me and Alf’s leg is on the mend. Every pet owner should have pet insurance!
Great!
Really happy with the coverage AKC offer and the price I pay. They look a little longer than I expected to reimburse me after my Lab had an op but it was sorted eventually and I’m happy with the service.
Quality service
AKC is thee ONLY pet insurance provider that offers coverage for preexisting conditions after 365 days of being a client. This is why I decided to get insurance from them, for my older dog. She recently passed. When I called AKC to remove her from the plan I have, they were very empathetic and sent a hand written card in the mail. I found that extremely heartwarming and comforting.
I still have a plan with them for my other dog. When I file a claim they are very quick to process the claim & reimbursement. From personal experience, turn around time is 2 weeks or less. If you need assistance, customer service is nice, understanding, and quickly replies.
The cost of insurance is reasonable/ affordable for the coverage. Compared to other insurance companies. When I was searching for insurance for my 13 yr cocker spaniel & 2 yr old husky, AKC was about $140 a month for BOTH dogs. Other providers were quoting me $200-400+ just for my 13 yr old cocker spaniel (ludacris!). In addition, while calculating the annual cost & coverage options to compare, AKC was forthright and didn’t make it hard to find all the info I needed. Some other providers, we’re as forthcoming with information regarding insurance. In addition, the information/ platform is user friendly. Whereas, some other providers worded / framed their information in a way that seems to appear cheaper w/ more coverage but in actuality it’s more expensive & pointless lol. AKC also has coverage for breeding; a lot of providers don’t. Something to think about if you’re ever considering breeding.
Great to have
My puppy was in a fight a couple weeks ago . They took care of everything . I paid Upfront an received a full reimbursement.
I definitely would recommend no pet owner should ever be left in the dark .
