Trupanion launched in the US in 2008, having started in Canada. Their founder, Darryl Rawlings, first experienced the need for pet insurance as a teenager, when his family couldn’t afford a routine operation for their poodle, Mitzy. At just two years old, they lost her.

As a company full of dog and cat lovers (with an office full of their furry friends), Trupanion has built up a reputation as a trusted pet insurance provider. Working with veterinarians, Trupanion designed a policy so that other pet parents wouldn’t have to go through what Darryl’s family did. In 2020, the company announced that they had insured over 500,000 pets in America, and paid out over $1 billion in claims. Here at Petted, we can vouch for their ease of use, speed of payment and compassion for your beloved pet first-hand.

Trupanion can also, in some cases, pay your vet directly to avoid out-of-pocket expenses for you.

FACT! As well as the US and Canada, Trupanion offers pet insurance in Puerto Rico

We compared a few plans with a few different insurers and decided to go with Trupanion, even though they weren’t the cheapest. I read a few reviews and got a good feeling about them. Well I’m glad I did because Trupanion have been fantastic. These people are real pet lovers. Great service!

Trupanion has really been instrumental

Trupanion has really been instrumental in helping me afford to care for my pets….which is important since I would do anything for them! The only reason I graded them as 4 stars instead of 5 is due to their policy on dental treatment. It’s frustrating that dental care isn’t covered if that pet has ANY sign of tarter prior to enrollment since the only way to avoid that is to enroll them as pups….and most rescue pups are adult. This policy has gone back and forth a few times. As someone who brushes the dogs teeth every night and fallows all recommendations from the vet, I appreciated it a lot more when they allowed coverage after a dental prophy restored the pet’s dental score to a 0 or 1. Dental procedures can be costly and my vet doesn’t believe in risking anesthesia until there is adequate reason, so this will always be an issue for us!

Thank you for being a great insurer! I would have given five stars but I do think the prices are slightly high, but other than that it’s amazing.

We are so grateful that we have Trupanion for both of our dogs. We have had several dogs previously and didn’t have pet insurance. We didn’t know how beneficial it was going to be

I honestly am extremely happy with Trupanion

I honestly am extremely happy with Trupanion. I have been with them for years. My dog is now 7 – and she was about 6 months old when I got her and got Trupanion. Prior to that, however, my previous dog was covered by Trupanion and I don’t know what I would’ve done without them! My pets are my kids along with my two legged human kids and I would do anything for them! I could never and will never have a pet euthanized just because I can’t afford the vet bill. That being said, I have never ever had to make that decision because of my excellent coverage with Trupanion! There was a time about six years ago that I was unhappy with Trupanion because I felt like I had to keep appealing their decisions regarding payment of the deductible. That was something I never experienced before so it was very frustrating at the time. We went through a bit of a rough patch but they have again become an incredible company to deal with. Their coverage is extensive, and I don’t have to worry about my four legged baby girl because her plan is top notch and Trupanion has earned my trust. I recommend Trupanion all the time to people, and I cringe when I hear someone is with a different insurance company. The one concern or complaint that I have is the monthly premium increasing every year. Trupanion states that they do not increase premiums based on the amount of claims which is great, if that in fact is true, but their rates increase every year and I don’t like that. I don’t think the premiums should increase yearly and when there is an increase, it should be minimal. It would be nice if they covered part or all of a vet exam as well. All vets charge an exam fee and that can be a financial hinderance for seeking vet care. A past dog I had ended up at the vets for nearly 3 months. Everyday a vet would do an exam, often more than once a day. I ended up paying thousands of dollars in exam fees because Trupanion did not cover that. Otherwise, I’m very happy with Trupanion and at this point, there is not any other company I would go with because I love Trupanion! Feedback: Trupanion’s invoice/notice is confusing when a claim is submitted by the vet clinic because Trupanion does not show all of the information as to what was and was not covered. It would be nice if I could look at a Trupanion receipt/invoice and see exactly what the vet submitted and what Trupanion covered and did not cover. They only give very bare bones information. For example : if I had some meds at home and didn’t need them from the vet, I can’t tell if it was billed to Trupanion or if it was taken off the invoice because I can’t see any details.
